Sturgis Wild West Days Welcomes Burch Rodeo

Max Burch started raising bucking horses in 1981, when he took 25 head of mares from Pat Burne of Milliron, MT on shares. Max always had a passion for horses, raising saddle horses, race horses, and then bucking horses.

in 1985 Pat Byrne sold out and Max bought the mares he had been running on shares. In 1987 the stud Burches were using got injured. Max went to Ekalaka, MT and bought a young bay stud from Erie Tooke. Ernie said the stud was a grandson of Grey Wolf. He proved to be a really good sire. Over 40 of his sons and daughters have qualified to go to the NFR in the last 15 years.

With growing interest from Max’s sons Chad an Matt, Burches purchased their PRCA card from Sutton Rodeo in 1999. Now, the boys with their Dad run about 800 head of bucking horses. They are best known for their saddle bronc horse Blood Brother, who was the PRCA Saddle Bronc of the Year 2008. He has now been retired with honors.

Currently, Burch Rodeo’s stud Lunatic Fringe, is the horse everyone wants to ride and watch at the rodeos. With his striking good looks and flashy personality, he has been to the Nation Finals Rodeo 8 times and he is the sire of sons and daughters that have been selected for the NFR.

In addition to bucking horses, the Burch family is raising their own bucking bulls. Matt has a rodeo cow herd of 150 and 150 bulls. The bulls that are most notable would be Zombie Zoo, which was the reserve bull of the NFR, Smoke Screen, and Classic Hit among others.

The Burch family regard the livestock as part of their family. All of the animals are cared with concern, fed well, and treated with respect. No horse is bucked before the age of 4 and then only once. At 5 they go to a few rodeos and at 6 it is onto the PRCA string. Max takes the younger horses to amateur, high school and college rodeos and Matt and Chad take care of the PRCA shows. The Burchs live and breath bucking stock no matter how near or far, big or small, they will bring the stock that bucks!
